What is Mental Toughness?
Your mind and body are intricately linked and, if you want to be mentally tough, you need to work on both. Mental toughness relies on a balance of body and mind.
Typically, fitter people handle pressure well, for longer. Their bodies stave off fatigue for longer and their performance stays higher for longer as a result. Strangely, the Victorians had it right to some extent. Physical endurance positively affects mental endurance (so, those early morning runs and cold showers could be back, sorry about that!).
Physical state is not the only factor though, your mental state needs attention too! Without the ability to focus you could be extremely fit and still not perform.
If you can learn to control your heart rate, and the chemical cascade of adrenaline etc that goes with pressure, you will perform well. Add to this powerful beliefs, and positive thinking, and you will be unstoppable when achieving your goals!
Being Mentally Tough requires 4 factors
1 - Challenge:
Your ability to see challenge as opportunity, not threat.
2 - Control:
The extent to which you see yourself as in control of your
destiny and accept responsibility for your experience.
3 - Confidence:
High levels of confidence in your abilities and your
interpersonal skills.
4 - Commitment:
The degree to which you get focused on your goals
and how determined you are to reach them.
